A Trip To The Zoo...

Yes, I know this is a "SKETCH" blog....and those of you (both of you!) who visit come to see my artings and not my personal photo albums. But I went to the Birmingham Zoo today with my friend Rachel and I got a few decent pictures, so I thought I'd share them here just because I can. You're a captive audience (so long as I don't tell you about the "back button" on your browser)! I've posted a handful of favorites as thumbnails, and to avoid clutter I will include the rest of the bunch as text links. Those of you who view all of them will have little trouble figuring out that primates, especially the mighty gorilla, are my indesputable favorite! Hope you enjoy, and back with more actual art very soon!

They Might Be Giants!

This is my questionable attempt at a caricature of the two Johns, Flansburgh and Linnell, of my favorite band, They Might Be Giants. Being that I'm not great at caricatures, I tried to add a little something extra to the piece to make it unique....therefore all the clutter in the background are things representing, either literally or figuratively, lyrics from various ones of their songs. I believe I counted at least 20 references in there somewhere. And as is common for me, I've included the original pencils just for fun. Enjoy the silliness!

And Now More Animals...

Quite a meager post this time around...just a few additional scratchings of those animal characters. Oh, and a random human girl face thrown in for good measure. No further explanation given or necessary!

More Missing Lincoln

Here's more (very rough) conceptual sketches for the possible Missing Lincoln project that I've been having fun with here of late. Enjoy.

Very Random Work Doodles

Had an event at work this week that was supposed to start at a given time and then, after an hour or so of sitting and waiting, it actually started. During the hour of waiting, I made the following random cries for help--er--I mean DOODLES--with a ballpoint pen on some scratch paper. ENJOY!

Still More Animals...

Not much more can be said. Just some more doodles of those same animals, this time with some more Benjamin and Prof. Buckum, etc.

More Animals plus a special Gollum Assembly

Here are more sketches of those animal-riffic characters I've been drawing here lately. And as an added bonus, you get a sketch of a Gollum Assembly, which relates back to an in-joke, but I'm posting it here anyway, as though all were in on it and cared!

Jennifer and the "Easter Bueno"

It was about time for another Jennifer & Bueno illustration, so I did one themed for Easter, and here it is! There's also a bonus sketch, showing Bueno's true feelings about his bunny costume. And I've included the preliminary pencils as well. Seems the past few Jenn & Bueno pieces I've done have all been Holiday-themed. I need to get back to doing some non-seasonal pin-ups of them as well, it would seem. I never indtended them to be special-occasion-onlies!

More Character Doodles

More characters here to go along with the others I've been posting. This time we see some more conceptual sketches of the evil (or at least not-very-nice) Professor Buck Buckum and his lobotomized assistant, Benjamin. And then we see more of the female cat character (whom I've yet to settle on a specific name for). One can tell from looking at these doodles that it's not only her name but her look that I'm having trouble settling on.

More Conceptual Character Sketches

Here are more various conceptual character sketches that seem to have been pouring out. Some of the characters you'll recognize from other recent doodles. I've been mixing, matching, and creating anew as I've been trying to settle on a definitive version of a comic strip to test out.
Obviously this batch centers around animal characters (no, it's not a "furry" thing--"not that there's anything wrong with that"--it's just a funny animal thing).
There are more rough sketches of these characters I'll be sharing in coming days, as well as some more Lincoln doodles.

Batmite!

This is my latest contribution to the latest Character Jam over on the Drawing Board, which obviously centers this time around Batmite, the not-so-loveable little imp who has been known to rather cheesily torture Batman from time to time. He is, after all, the Bat's biggest fan!

Missing Lincoln

And now there is yet another idea to add to the stable of my random concepts for comics--comics being those thingst that I never get off my rear and actually MAKE, whether I have good ideas or not. Alas, the newest project I've been developing is called "Missing Lincoln", and it chronicles the misadventures of our 16th President as he's lost in a strange, fantastic world along with his sidekick, Log. This all is happening, of course, around the same time we thought he was "assassinated" (but he wasn't really--he just went missing--get it?) This post features some of the early preliminary sketches I've done with the idea. Presumably they'll continue to evolve a bit more as I develop it further--IF I develop it further. Time, as always will tell. For now, enjoy the sketches.

And just for fun, I've included a handful of my favorite Abraham Lincoln quotes:

"It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues."

"Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves."

"Your own resolution to success is more important than any one other thing."

"Determine that a thing can and shall be done, and then we shall find the way."

"If I had eight hours to cut down a tree, I'd spend six sharpening my axe."

"I care not for a man's religion whose dog or cat are not the better for it."

"Common looking people are the best in the world; that is the reason the Lord makes so many of them."

"Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"

"People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

"Truth is generally the best vindication against slander."

"No matter how much cats fight, there always seems to be plenty of kittens."

"Marriage is neither heaven nor hell. It is simply purgatory."

And the quote that perhaps sadly explains my own lack of a relationship:
"I can never be satisfied with anyone who would be blockhead enough to have me."

They're GRRREAT!

Tony the Tiger, famous mascot for Kellogg's "Frosted Flakes" cereal has a catch phrase that almost everyone knows: "They're grrreat!". Like most success stories, though, Tony did not find fame overnight. It is a little known fact that he tried many, many unsuccessful occupations before finally finding the job (and the phrase) that worked for him. Now, thanks to this crappily drawn comic, we can have a look at some of what our beloved Mr. Tger went through to get to where he is today!

Robin Williams Eat Your Heart Out

I was in Chick-Fil-A this week to get a chicken biscuit for breakfast. A man and his wife were in line ahead of me. And this fellow was far and away the hairest biped I have ever laid eyes on. He would strike fear into the very heart of Robin Williams himself! Now the guy seemed like a right decent chap, so I don't mean to poke fun at him, but everything about his appearance screamed to be made into a cartoon. So I sketched him. And as an afterthought slapped a little crappy color on it for no reason. And here you have it. A sketch of the hariest person alive.

X-Men at the request of Dick!

Well, Dick, during tonight's doodling session, it turns out you got your wish. How well it was executed is questionable, but you got your wish. (Man, this blog is making me impressionable!)

Kooking vith Kurt

If mutants were more widely accepted in our society, perhaps the X-men's Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, would be free to become a famous television chef. "Kooking vith Kurt" or something like that. I dunno... This cheesy little Emeril-inspired pun of a drawing was done for a "Nightcrawler" thread on the Drawing Board.

Red-headed Twins

I actually drew this a few weeks ago for a "Redheads" thread on the Drawing Board. Never got around to posting it here, nor has it made it to my website yet, so it is today's blog update. And that, my friend, is no April fool.
